The FLETC is an agency under the Department of Homeland Security(DHS).  It was established by Treasury Order 217 in July 1970, for the purpose of providing consolidated Federal law enforcement training.Consolidation of law enforcement training permits the FederalGovernment to emphasize training excellence and costeffectiveness.  Professional instruction and practical applicationprovide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to meet thedemanding challenges of a Federal law enforcement career.  Theylearn not only the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer, butthrough interaction with students from many other agencies, they alsobecome acquainted with the missions and duties of theircolleagues.  This interaction provides the foundation for a morecooperative Federal law enforcement effort.

The FLETC provides basic and advanced law enforcement training to 90Federal Partner Organizations (POs), as well as to state, local, tribal, and international law enforcement agencies.  Annually, theFLETC provides more than 300 different training programs at the fourdifferent training facilities in: Artesia, New Mexico; Charleston,South Carolina; Cheltenham, Maryland; and Glynco, Georgia. Additionally, the FLETC offers specialized training programs for state, local and international law enforcement personnel.  Theseofferings are designed to meet training needs not generally availableto state and local agencies and to enhance networking and cooperationthroughout the law enforcement community, domestically, as well as,worldwide.

To achieve accreditation, agencies submit to an independent reviewof their academy and/or program to ensure compliance with the FLETAStandards and Procedures in the areas of: Program Administration,Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery, with anadditional 20 standards for Academies. Accreditation is a cyclicalprocess occurring every three years. Each year, agencies must submitannual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new andindependent review of the academy/program.
