FLETA Board Grants Reaccreditation to two USSS Programs
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board is pleased to announce it granted reaccreditation status to the United States Secret Service (USSS) Emergency Response Team (ERT) Tactical Canine Course (TCC) and to the Explosive Detection Canine Course (EDCC) at the November 16, 2023, meeting.
The purpose of the ERT TCC is to instruct students on how to care for their canine and kennel facilities, principles of canine conditioning and canine psychology; and transitioning the application of these learned techniques from the classroom to the field. Obedience and proper apprehension techniques using a canine are taught in the classroom and in the field. Students learn prescribed tactical techniques with team members and are trained to work in high-distraction environments under critical stress and conduct scenario training that requires students to apply the Use of Force policy reasonably, decisively, and effectively. The length of the ERT TCC is 55 instructional days and consists of 440 hours of instruction. The average number of students per iteration of the program is four.
The purpose of the EDCC is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of basic principles of conditioning and basic obedience; to include identification of canine behaviors and verbal commands to control canines in a field environment. In addition, this course provides students with knowledge and hands-on experience in identifying changes of behavior in assigned canines. The EDCC is 85 instructional days and consists of 680 hours of instruction. The average number of students per iteration is 6-8.
The FLETA Board is the accrediting body for all federal law enforcement training and support programs. To achieve accreditation, training organizations submit to an independent review of their program and/or academy to ensure compliance with the FLETA Standards and Procedures in the areas of Administration, Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery. Accreditation is a cyclical process occurring every five years. Each year, training organizations must submit annual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new and independent review of the program/academy.
