FLETA Board Grants Reaccreditation to Two VA LETC Programs

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board is pleased to announce it granted reaccreditation status to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Law Enforcement Training Center (LETC), Instructor Development Course (IDC), and to the Police Officer Standardized Training Course (POSTC) at the May 11, 2023, meeting.

The purpose of the IDC is to meet the needs of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Police Services by providing students the basic skills necessary for recurring and basic instruction primarily to VA police officers and other VA personnel as needed. The IDC is 10 instructional days and consists of 80 hours of instruction. The average number of students per iteration of the program is 30-35.

The purpose of the POSTC is to provide duly appointed VA Police Officers with a specialized orientation to agency law enforcement policies and procedures; training that will ensure the proper exercise of federal statutory law enforcement authority; and specialized training that will prepare them for situations that involve patients or persons of diminished capacity. Conceptually, this course is designed to provide police officers with the knowledge, skills, and ability to blend their duties as law enforcement officers with the special needs of the public they serve. The POSTC is 40instructional days and consists of 400 hours of instruction. The average number of students per iteration of the program is 60.

The FLETA Board is the accrediting body for all federal law enforcement training and support programs. To achieve accreditation, training organizations submit to an independent review of their program and/or academy to ensure compliance with the FLETA Standards and Procedures in the areas of Administration, Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery. Accreditation is a cyclical process occurring every five years. Each year, training organizations must submit annual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new and independent review of the program/academy.
