The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation Board Grants Initial Accreditation to two U.S. Secret Service Programs

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board ispleased to announce it granted initial accreditation status to the U.S.Secret Service’s Canine Detection Training Program and Tactical CanineCourse at the October 31, 2013 meeting in Brunswick, Georgia.

The United States Secret Service’s Canine Detection Training Programprovides the highest level of explosive detection training and producescanine teams that are able to protect the President and our nation’sleaders, visiting heads of state and government, and National SpecialSecurity Events, in all environments and under all conditions. Studentsare members of the Uniformed Division. This course draws on a varietyof sources to include classroom instruction and practical applicationof care, maintenance and safety of canine and kennel facilities. Thiscourse provides students with knowledge and hands-on experience inidentifying changes of behavior in assigned canines for appropriateodors; as well as, proper execution of systematically and safelyclearing vehicles, buildings and luggage utilizing the detection teamsearch procedures.

The Tactical Canine Training Program provides the highest level oftactical canine training and produces canine teams to effectivelyassist the USSS’ Emergency Response Team in its mission of tacticalsearch and response, to secure the White House Complex perimeter andany other designated secure area.   Students are currentmembers of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).

The FLETA Board is the accrediting body for all federal lawenforcement training and support programs. To achieve accreditation,agencies submit to an independent review of their academy and/orprogram to ensure compliance with the FLETA Standards and Procedures in the areas of: Program Administration, Training Staff, TrainingDevelopment, and Training Delivery, with an additional 20 standards forAcademies. Accreditation is a cyclical process occurring every fiveyears. Each year, agencies must submit annual reports in preparationfor reaccreditation, which is a new and independent review of theacademy/program.
