The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board ispleased to announce it granted initial program accreditation status tothe U.S. Secret Service’s Firearms Instructor Training Course at theNovember 17, 2011 meeting in Annapolis Maryland.
The James J. Rowley Training Center is responsible for this and manyother programs. The USSS’s Firearms Instructor Training Course developsthe skills and abilities necessary to become a firearms instructor. Thecurriculum includes topic areas such as range safety, range management,marksmanship, ballistics, and instructional skills. Participants mustdemonstrate their knowledge, skills and abilities through practicalexercises, various courses of fire, and a writtenexamination.
Deputy Special Agent in Charge Percy Howard accepted the certificateof accreditation and thanked the Board for the honor of accrediting theprogram. He noted that Secret Service instructors take a lot of pridein the program. He also thanked the USSS Accreditation Manager KimCanitz, “who makes sure our policy is raised to the next level”.
To achieve accreditation, agencies submit to an independent reviewof their academy and/or program to ensure compliance with the FLETAStandards and Procedures in the areas of: Program Administration,Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery, with anadditional 20 standards for Academies. Accreditation is a cyclicalprocess occurring every three years. Each year, agencies must submitannual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new andindependent review of the academy/program.
