The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Boardelected Director Ronald L. Ward, U.S. Probation and Pretrial ServicesNational Training Academy, as the new Chair of the FLETA Board. Mr.Ward was elected to FLETA Chairperson on December 13, 2012, a positionthat carries a two-year term with a term limitation of two consecutiveterms. Prior to his selection, Mr. Ward served as the interim Chair,First Vice-chair, and Second Vice-chair.
“I am honored that my colleagues selected me as the FLETA BoardChair. The work of the FLETA Board is more important now than everbefore in our Nation’s history,” stated Ron Ward, FLETA BoardChairperson. “The FLETA process provides federal entities a frameworkfor ensuring that training meets mission requirements and federalmandates while also supporting sharing among agencies and identifyingand eliminating unneeded training resulting in savings.”
“The FLETA Office of Accreditation stands ready to support Mr. Wardas he steps in to this important position,” explained Gary B. Mitchell,Executive Director of the FLETA Office of Accreditation. “As morefederal agencies with law enforcement responsibilities become aware of the FLETA Standards, processes, and benefits of accreditation, theFLETA Board continues to work to improve Standards, research new areas,and identify ways to improve the professionalism, competence, andexcellence of federal law enforcement training.”
In his new role, Mr. Ward will lead 21 senior executives andrepresentatives from the federal government, academia, and othernon-federal organizations as members of the FLETA Board. The FLETABoard is the accrediting body for all federal law enforcement trainingand support programs. To achieve accreditation, agencies submit to anindependent review of their academy and/or program to ensure compliancewith the FLETA Standards and Procedures in the areas of: ProgramAdministration, Training Staff, Training Development, and TrainingDelivery, with an additional 20 standards for Academies. Accreditationis a cyclical process occurring every three years. Each year, agenciesmust submit annual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which isa new and independent review of the academy/program.
